The Royal National Mòd took place in Oban this year and saw pupils from both Sir E Scott and Leverhulme Memorial schools sweep the competition with several award-winning performances. The prizes built on last year’s success and highlighted the pool of young musical talent in Harris.
The junior choir came first in Puirt a Beul and Two-Part Harmony and the senior choir achieved first in Unison and Two-Part Harmony. Pupils impressed the judges with the quality of their Gaelic and singing. There were individual successes, too. Nathan Coghill, Scalpay, claimed the Gold medal in A' Seinn Salm Fosgailte Fo 19, continuing the long-standing tradition of excellence in Psalm Presenting within the Western Isles, while Fiona Langley and Luke Johnson secured the Traditional Singing 16-18 age group, respectively.
“For every family and village that these young people represent, they were an absolute credit to Sgoil Sir E Scott and the Isle of Harris. With many thanks to all who make the Mòd such a special event. In particular, special mention to Jayne MacDonald and the indefatigable Mòd Parents Committee,” the school shared on Facebook.
“We had a great Mòd all round in Oban, with individual and group successes. It is always encouraging when the children’s hard work pays off,” said choir conductor Jayne MacDonald. “None of it would be possible without the support and commitment from the SES Mòd Committee, and the community around us. Mòran taing!”
Over 200 competitions took place during the Mòd, featuring disciplines like Gaelic music and song, highland dancing, instrumental, drama, sport, and literature. The festival will return to Lochaber in 2025, from 10-18 October.
