Cold weather has arrived, and while most of us can’t bear being parted from our radiators, Mairi “Ord” MacKenzie is taking on the toughest version of the annual Chilly Challenge – the “Shark”. Her goal is to raise funds for selected charities.

The Chilly Challenge is held by Immerse Hebrides. Daring adults and children can join this virtual winter outdoor swimming challenge that lasts from 1 November 2024 to 31 March 2025. There are multiple categories to choose from, differing in swimming attire or frequency of swims or dips per week. The Shark Challenge requires the participants to undertake a swim or a dip five times a week for the entirety of five months! Each swim must be undertaken outdoors in water temperatures of 10 degrees Celsius or below.
“For my part, I will do this challenge without a wetsuit and in total it will mean that I will swim/dip 105 times this winter and probably mainly here in Harris… Saves me having to carry a thermometer as it will always be below 10 through the winter,” shares Mairi on her JustGiving page.
Mairi is hoping to raise funds for Bethesda Hospice, the Brain Tumour Charity, MND Scotland (motor neuron disease), and the Royal National Lifeboat Institution, all charities that are important to her. So far, £577.00 has been raised, but there are still months to… Swim. You can find out more about Mairi’s chilling efforts here:
