In our regular feature, we join a local for a tea break and find out how they spend their time and their time off. This week, we welcome Donald MacLeod, the new Finance and Office Administrator at Harris Voluntary Service.

Donald, please tell us about yourself and your work.
I live on the picturesque island of Scalpay with my wife Donna and we have two daughters, Emma and Claire. We also have a Cockapoo named Seoras who keeps us on our toes with his mischievous personality. I have one brother, Murdo, who drives a local bus and is well-known to many in Harris. My elderly father resides close by, but my dear mother passed away in July 2022.
I am employed as a Finance and Office Administrator with HVS and I am currently being trained by Judi who is retiring and who will be missed by all within the office.
I recently retired from Police service having spent 20 years as a police officer - over 7 years as a uniformed officer in Portree and over 12 years as a Detective within the Stornoway CID unit, and I enjoyed both roles. I worked with some amazing people and I will always cherish the memories from that time. Throughout my policing career, I gained extensive experience in handling challenging situations, problem-solving, and working under pressure, and I believe this will assist me in my new role.
In addition to my service in the police force, I joined the SFRS in 2017 as a Retained Firefighter stationed in Scalpay and I thoroughly enjoy serving my community.
I am a member of our local church and I have been the treasurer of the congregation since 2018. I regularly lead the psalm singing during the church service both in English and in Gaelic. Gaelic Psalm singing remains a powerful symbol of cultural and religious heritage.
How did you get where you are today?
I am a very determined individual and from my early years, I grew up with strong values which I learnt from my parents. I wasn't a brilliant scholar but got by and if I could turn the clock back I would have tried harder in school. I would advise any scholars reading this to make sure they study for their exams. 18 years after leaving school, I had to study for the Police exams which was far from easy but I made the grade!
What are your goals for the near future?
My priority is spending time with Donna and the girls and remaining active in the local community and church. I am currently also focused on my career growth, transitioning into my new role and applying leadership, organisational, and problem-solving skills. Health and well-being are important goals, and I hope to maintain a balanced and fulfilling lifestyle after years of demanding public service.
How do you like to spend your time off?
I enjoy taking my wee pal Seoras for walks around Scalpay. I like listening to music, especially Gaelic songs from various artists. And I enjoy taking my dad for a spin when I am off as it gets him out of the house and keeps him mobile.
I will be kept busy in the next few months mowing grass at my own house, my dad's house, Donna's parents’ house, and Emma's house, so this will hopefully keep me active.
I enjoy watching sport on TV, especially football, and enjoy banter with friends who know I support the mighty Glasgow Rangers and Arsenal.
What are your favourite places in Harris?
I am very privileged to live in such a beautiful area and Scalpay is obviously my favourite place. The footpath to Scalpay Lighthouse is great and the views are stunning. Donna and I enjoy going to Luskentyre beach when we are able to, and if you haven't been, then please consider putting it on your "To do" list.
It's tea break time. What's on the menu?
In my opinion, there is nothing that beats a cup of tea with a few McVities Rich Tea Biscuits and Lurpak butter. I am very fortunate that there is an abundance of cakes and biscuits within our office, so I am well looked after by my colleagues. Please pop in for a visit if you are passing!
